QR codes have been integral to logistics since their inception in 1994. Similar to barcodes, they primarily serve two essential functions in warehouses: facilitating quicker inventory management and providing comprehensive traceability—allowing for the monitoring of products throughout various stages of the supply chain.


What Are QR Codes?

Before we dive deeper, let’s clarify what QR codes are. QR (Quick Response) codes are a coding system designed for rapid scanning. They can store various types of information, including numeric codes, text, web links, and even small binary files.

QR codes consist of square patterns made up of small black and white squares known as “modules.”.

Although QR codes were initially created for manufacturing, they quickly gained traction in the logistics sector. With their ability to manage more information and be read faster, they are ideal for tracking products through various supply chain processes.

You might wonder, “Why should I switch to QR codes if I’m already using barcodes?” Let’s examine the differences and advantages of both coding types:

  • Information: Companies handle a vast array of product data, including manufacture and expiration dates, ownership, demand levels, and special storage considerations. QR codes can store a significant amount of information—up to 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, or 2,953 bytes—allowing for up to ten times more data than barcodes.
  • Sizes: Businesses deal with a wide range of products, from large items like refrigerators to tiny components such as microchips, all of which must be accurately labeled. QR codes maintain effectiveness regardless of product size.

QR Code Solutions for Warehouses

Whether utilizing barcodes or QR codes, coding is vital for ensuring each product is properly identified. Although initially used in manufacturing, QR codes have been adopted in logistics to enhance operational efficiency and expedite product identification.

To implement QR codes in a warehouse, you'll need laser scanners specifically designed for this purpose. These devices should be capable of reading 2D codes in addition to standard 1D codes, particularly the desired QR format.

In a warehouse setting, all products and processes must be managed by a Warehouse Management System (WMS). By scanning a barcode or QR code, this WMS can access pertinent product data (primarily SKU and turnover), allowing it to assign a location to each item.
